Earlier this year, British founders called on the Prime Minister to back a start-up competition to help British entrepreneurs grow. The letter said: “We are all involved in the entrepreneurial ecosystem and the UK is undoubtedly one of the best places in the world to start a business.”

The University of Manchester is at the forefront of fostering innovation and entrepreneurship across campus and relaunches its annual start-up competition. The Masood Entrepreneurship Center’s Venture Further Awards (VFA’s) are the UK’s premier university-run start-up competition for undergraduate and graduate entrepreneurs.

Now open to applications, the VFAs develop and launch entrepreneurial ideas from students and graduates from across the University of Manchester. Allow innovative hopefuls from all fields to enter the competition in five categories: environment, healthcare, services, social and technology. No matter which faculty or department a student or graduate belongs to, they should find an appropriate category for their idea.

With an increased 2023 prize fund of £100,000, the VFAs will fund ten new business proposals, opening the door to a world of support programmes, workshops, mentors, networking and follow-on funding.

2021 Technology category winner and founder of Bright Biotech, Mohammed El Hajj raised £3.5m in investment last year and was one of nine teams responsible for the competitive Global Incubator Program 2022 – Gateway to Asia selected by Innovate UK. Contest entries should be viable and credible business proposals with real potential for success. The application period ends on Thursday, February 23, 2023. After that, up to twenty finalists present their company to a jury of experts to win one of the cash prizes. MEC will also be offering support sessions between October 2022 and the March 2023 competition final for any aspiring entrepreneurs who wish to participate.

Last year’s competition was a huge success, with the long-awaited return to a Physical VFA22 Awards Ceremony at the University of Manchester’s prestigious Whitworth Hall. Ellie Buckley, Manager of the Venture Further Awards, said: “We’re celebrating his 20th birthdayth Annually, the Venture Further Awards have established over a hundred companies and secured over £20m in total investment. I’m sure this year will continue that tradition of producing phenomenal start-ups that will benefit the region and the wider UK economy.”
