The Washington Post’s Maite Fernández Simon joins Business team as audience strategy editor

We are pleased to announce that Maite Fernández Simon is joining the business team as Audience Strategy Editor, a new leadership role that will help guide the path of our expanding technology and business reporting.

Maite brings more than a decade of experience and a deep understanding of The Post and its audience to this important role. Working closely with Erika Allen and the Audience Strategy and Growth team, Maite will use all available disciplines – including tactics for reaching new readers, building loyalty, and leveraging social media and search – to identify strategies to drive readers into the To be at the center of our work and to help guide decisions about what is covered and how.

Maite currently works as a reporter for Breaking News in Foreign as part of the newsroom’s Opportunity Year program and joined The Post in 2018 as Operations Editor for the Foreign and National Security teams, optimizing articles for search, analyzing traffic data and providing training to guide digital best practices. She was promoted to Senior Operations Editor in April 2021, a senior position in which she played a central role in live reporting strategies and the first German elections after Angela Merkel announced her resignation, and the funeral of Prince Philip in the UK worked with commissioned editors.

Before joining the Post, Maite worked at CQ Roll Call where she was responsible for audience engagement strategy. Previously, she worked at the International Center for Journalists, where she served as Communications Director and Editor-in-Chief of IJNet.org, a website for journalists published in seven languages. She began her career as a general duty reporter for the national newspaper El Observador in Montevideo, Uruguay.

Maite is from Uruguay and earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from ORT University before earning a master’s degree in multimedia journalism from the University of Maryland. In 2020 she was selected for the Women’s Leadership Accelerator, a year-long mentorship program run by the Online News Association. She lives in Gaithersburg, Maryland with her husband Justin, their two children and their family dog, Uzi. As a native Spanish speaker and enthusiastic runner, Maite enjoys cooking in her free time.
