Telemundo Promotes Peacock As Streaming Home Of World Cup Qatar 2022

It’s hard to believe it’s almost time for World Cup action. Telemundo Deportes snapped up Univision’s Spanish-language rights over a decade ago and launched exclusive coverage of two of the most expensive and time-zone-heavy venues: the 2018 tournament in Russia and 2022 in Qatar.

The steep price tag of $600 million and additional multi-million dollar reporting and transmission costs means the company is doing everything it can to maximize its investment. For the 2018 World Cup, matches were broadcast on Telemundo, sister cable network Universo, and the Telemundo and NBC sports apps.

Of the 64 games, Telemundo will broadcast 56 games and Universo 8. But this year there is a new player in the mix.

The two-year Peacock service will broadcast every match of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 live in Spanish. There will also be a dedicated World Cup hub with daily highlights and analysis shows and on-demand replays of all matches, as well as documentaries featuring football legends Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona, as well as historical insights into previous World Cups.

Peacock will also be hosting Copa Mundial 24/7 Virtual Channel throughout the tournament, produced by Telemundo’s digital content brand Tplus, with daily and extended highlights, analysis and debate shows.

“Peacock is thrilled to be streaming football’s biggest global event, the FIFA World Cup, for the first time,” said Rick Cordella, Chief Commercial Officer, Peacock. “Our offering on Peacock will complement Telemundo Deportes programming and expand it to a wider audience.”

Peacock will be the only direct-to-consumer streaming service in the United States to simulcast live coverage of all 64 games produced by Telemundo Deportes, including one hour of pre- and post-game coverage on-site from Qatar.

The first 12 games of the 2022 World Cup will be available to Peacock subscribers on the Free Tier. Beginning November 24th, the remaining 52 games will be accessible to Peacock Premium subscribers.

The World Cup begins on Sunday, November 20, and host country Qatar meets Ecuador at 11am ET. The United States begin their group game against Wales on Monday, November 21 at 2pm ET. Mexico’s first game is on Tuesday, November 22 at 11:00 am ET against Poland.

The United States meets England in marquee group stage games on Friday, November 25 at 2pm ET. Mexico meets Argentina on Saturday, November 26 at 2pm ET.

Telemundo Deportes match coverage will be hosted by Six-time Emmy-winning Soccer Hall of Famer Chief Commentator Andres Cantor, as well as Emmy-winning sportswriter Miguel Gurwitz and Emmy-nominated Telemundo Sports and Entertainment Host Ana Jurka, Premier
League presenter Carlota Vizmanos and Mexican football icon Carlos Hermosillo as official hosts, leading the pre- and post-match analysis from Telemundo’s presentation studio at the center of the cultural Souq Waqif Marketplace.

Talents covering the 2022 World Cup on Peacock’s 24/7 channel include Carmen Boquin, Diego Arrioja, Piero Menor, Luis Baraldi, Pablo Mariño, Pablo Alsina and the current Houston Dash
and former Liga MX Femenil player María Sánchez, who represented Mexico at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
