Six students have been named Graduate Entrepreneurial Fellows for Fall 2022

Six students representing three U of A colleges were awarded Graduate Entrepreneurial Fellowships by the Office of Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

The Graduate Entrepreneurial Fellowship was established in 2021 with support from the Walton Family Charitable Support Foundation to support promising students in their search for a solid entrepreneurial education. The scholarship includes a graduate assistantship and tuition waiver for students who do not already have one, as well as an additional scholarship. Fellows pursue entrepreneurial coursework and receive intensive mentoring, access to seed funding, and business plan coaching.

Asmita Singh, a PhD student in the Department of Food Science, works to develop sensor-friendly products and environments to improve accessibility for neurodivergent people. She was attracted to the scholarship because of the opportunity it affords her to experiment and learn in an area outside of her area of ​​expertise. She hopes to build a network of mentors and form lifelong connections with fellow entrepreneurs.

“An interdisciplinary entrepreneurial focus brings diverse perspectives that can help a company be resilient,” said Singh. “Our team might have strong technical knowledge, but ideas don’t become reality without our business and marketing experienced members.”

This opportunity to collaborate across multiple disciplines also interested Bhavya Patel, a first-year master’s student in business administration.

“I love how the path of innovation is different for everyone, and every day there is a new challenge to solve that ultimately leads to impactful solutions,” said Patel. “It’s important to connect with people from different backgrounds because it allows us to broaden our horizons of where better discussions and outcomes can take place.”

The Fellows listed below devote at least 20 hours per week to their entrepreneurial activities:

  • Montinique Davis

    • Entrepreneurial Focus: Understanding the “why” and “how” behind success in order to grow and scale efficiently

  • Mahsa Haseli


    • Course of study: University of Applied Sciences, doctorate

    • Specialization: process engineering

    • Faculty Advisor: Jorge Almodovar

    • Business Focus: Replace pills and injectables with novel electronic patches that heal wounds in humans and animals while monitoring drug delivery to patients

  • Roseline Iga


    • Degree: Walton College; Master of Applied Business Analytics

    • Discipline: Information Systems

    • Faculty Advisor: Elizabeth Keiffer

    • Entrepreneurial Focus: Improve work-life balance through process improvements in operations and service delivery for startups, then scale to larger organizations

  • Bhavya Patel


    • Degree: Walton College; Master of Business Administration

    • Discipline: Entrepreneurship

    • Entrepreneurial Focus: Leveraging technological innovations to streamline health information and turn education into action

  • Asmita Singh


    • Major: Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food & Life Sciences; promotion

    • Subject: Food Science

    • Faculty Advisor: Han-Seok Seo

    • Entrepreneurial Focus: Modifying food properties and creating sensory-friendly environments to improve accessibility for neurodivergent individuals

The master’s students in the program received the Graduate Entrepreneurial Fellowship, and three PhD students received the Kaneaster and Ruth Lindley Hodges Entrepreneurial Fellowship.

The Graduate Entrepreneurial Fellowship program offers a Graduate Assistantship and $10,000 stipend for masters students or a $12,000 stipend for graduate students, if needed. The Hodges Fellowship is awarded annually to three outstanding graduate students, increasing their stipend to $22,000.

Applications are currently open to applicants hoping to continue their fellowship year from spring 2023 and will be reviewed by an interdisciplinary faculty committee in November.

A virtual information event on the scholarship and Graduate Certificate in Entrepreneurship will take place on October 7 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Interested students can register here.

All fellows take the New Venture Development I and II graduate courses offered by Walton College, in which they implement their business ideas in interdisciplinary teams.
