New Diversity and Inclusion Resources to Assist With Bio-economy Talent Shortage


OTTAWA, Ontario–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Today, BioTalent Canada launched the Build resilience in the workplace Resources for their new employer recognition program IDEAL Biosciences. In addition to providing guidance for employers looking to submit applications to the program this fall, these resources are designed to assist in recruiting and retaining talent while upholding the IDEAL principles (inclusiveness, diversity, equity and accessibility).

The IDEAL Biosciences Employer Recognition Program will recognize organizations in Canada’s bioeconomy that are leaders in embodying the diverse and inclusive business principles needed to foster growth and success in the industry.

From alleviating talent shortages to gaining better insights into stakeholders, the benefits for companies that integrate IDEA into their talent management strategies are immense. Despite these benefits, labor market intelligence produced by BioTalent Canada indicates that the number of employers hiring from underrepresented groups remains low. These resources explain why hiring underrepresented groups increases an organization’s potential.

Toronto-based Shift Health, a strategic consulting firm that supports health research and innovation around the world with a unique science-based approach, shared with BioTalent Canada its process of intentionally building Inclusivity, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility (IDEA) into every aspect from their operations.

“Since we began explicitly incorporating IDEA principles throughout our organization, we’ve seen a tremendous expansion in openness and authenticity from the top down,” said Ryan Wiley, President of Shift Health. “When people are more comfortable expressing themselves, they are much more creative and innovative. BioTalent Canada Build resilience in the workplace Resources were developed in part through the project Building resilience and sustainability for the bioeconomy to withstand disruption, funded by the Future Skills Center. Through this project, BioTalent Canada has worked to research and evaluate innovative practices and technologies implemented by agile, resilient and diverse Canadian bioeconomy employers to thrive in highly disruptive economic situations.

Pedro Barata, Executive Director of the Future Skills Centre, says these efforts to reach and engage under-represented populations are an excellent example of the programs FSC is investing in to encourage innovation and fill future skills gaps in the workforce. “Recruiting and retaining talent that respects equity, diversity and inclusion can serve as a model that creates meaningful employment while helping underserved populations break down barriers and maximize employer outreach to further fill the widening workforce gap close,” says Barata.

In addition to the three resources launched today, BioTalent Canada will create additional resources on workplace resilience to support employers in the bioeconomy.

About the IDEAL recognition program

IDEAL Biosciences’ employer recognition program, which stands for inclusivity, diversity, equity and accessibility, will recognize organizations in Canada’s bioeconomy that are leaders in embodying the diverse and inclusive business principles necessary to foster growth and success in the industry are.

Organizations with fewer than 50 employees and over 50 employees applying for the IDEAL award will be evaluated and scored against IDEA’s best practices.

The program is not an award but an annual award that companies can apply for and is granted upon meeting or exceeding established benchmarks. Organizations that do not receive the award will receive instructions and suggestions for improvement.

The call for applications for the IDEAL Biosciences Employer recognition program will start in autumn 2022.
