Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw was honored today with the 2022 HK Firodia Lifetime Achievement Award. Shaw was one of India’s leading entrepreneurs and the second richest self-made woman in the country.
The Executive Chairman and Founder of Biocon Limited and Biocon Biologics Limited, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, received this prestigious award from the HK Firodia Memorial Foundation for the 25th time. The HK Firodia Awards Selection Committee decided unanimously to present Shaw with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw said, “I feel extraordinarily privileged and honored to be recognized for my lifelong efforts to build Biocon into a responsible and empathetic biotech company driven by the goal of providing affordable access to… essential medicines.” She continued by sharing what she felt as a scientist about the congratulations: “As a scientist, I was inspired by the vision of creating an organization that uses science and technology to provide access to life-saving medicines To expand medicines for patients at the bottom tier of the economy ladder.” Shaw also said, “Through our philosophy of affordable innovation, we have been able to make a difference to global health justice by ensuring that no patient anywhere in the world has access to vital and life-saving biological medicines a be denied due to affordability.”
About the HK Firodia Award
The HK Firodia Award was established in 1996 in memory of the late Shri HK Firodia who is a visionary in the Indian automotive industry. The awards are presented to outstanding Indian scientists for their contributions to any field of science or technology. dr APJ Abdul Kalam, the former President of India, was the first recipient of this award in 1996. Some of the previous recipients are Dr. MK Bhan, Dr. K. Vijay Raghavan, Dr. RA Mashelkar, Dr. Jayant Narlikar, Prof. CNR Rao, Dr. K. Kasturirangan, etc., who have made tremendous contributions in the field of science and technology.
On the 25th anniversary of the award, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw was also the main guest at the award ceremony as she presented the HK Firodia Vijnan Ratna Award to Dr. Gagandeep Kang, Distinguished Virologist and Professor of Microbiology in the Department of Gastrointestinal Sciences at Christian, presented Vellore Medical School (CMC); and the HK Firodia Vijnan Bhushan Award to Dr. Tessy Thomas, Distinguished Scientist and Director General, Aeronautical Systems, Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO).
Contributions by Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw
Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw was a science and technology visionary with a focus on healthcare, and she is also a passionate philanthropist. Shaw is the founder of Biocon, a global biopharmaceutical company recognized by the world. She has also become a role model for women in the same industry and even the small business owners to look forward to.
During the Covid pandemic, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw found innovative solutions to tackle the crisis in an affordable way. She received India’s highest civilian honor, the Padma Shri, in 1989 and the Padma Bhushan in 2005. Their accreditations are also worldwide. She has also been elected as a board member in prestigious institutes such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA, National Academy of Engineering, USA and a few others. She is also among the first Indian signers of the Giving Pledge, a global commitment to donate much of her wealth to philanthropy.
