Jasmine Guillory is the New York Times Bestselling author of eight books including her debut novel, The Wedding Date and the successor The application, a Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick. She is also a regular book author on The Today Show. Guillory’s latest romance novel, drunk on loveis out today. Ahead of the release of her latest rom-com reading, women’s Day spoke to the author about her writing process, her research stays in wine country and her very first book. (Spoilers: no one else has ever read it.)
Now she has published them eighth Book – and here’s what you should know about it, from the plot and characters to whether it’s a standalone novel.
What is Jasmine Guillory’s new book for 2022? drunk on love around?
Located in the wine country of Napa Valley, drunk on love centers around a small family-owned winery owned by Margot Noble and her brother Elliot. The book begins with Margot, who has just returned from a business trip, sitting at her best friend’s bar talking to Luke, the man who has sat next to her. “She ends up going home with him, they have a very fun one night stand — or so Margot thinks,” Guillory shares.
“And then she gets to work the next day and discovers that her newest employee at her winery, whom her brother hired while she was out of town, is Luke. So they have to work together if this is over their heads. Margot definitely doesn’t want her brother to know she slept with her newest employee. And so they have to figure that out while having a distinct tension and all sorts of emotions between the two of them.
What is the inspiration behind it drunk on love?
“When I’m done while we were togetherI knew that was kind of the end of the wedding date Universe. I knew that According to the book, my latest book, should be next,” says Guillory. But what would come next? “I really had no idea because this was the first time I’d started something brand new in a while. And then, all of a sudden, I thought I wanted to score a book in wine country. And as soon as I thought that, I had a vision of exactly what the beginning of the book would be like.”
“I had so much fun living in wine country with Margot and Luke and finding out who they were, what made them tick. And exploring a different universe, a different place that wasn’t a big city, that was a different kind of work place and different people. And so I hope people really love this book.”
What is the Jasmine Guillory writing process like?
“Often when I think about the beginnings of a book, three to five or six scenes come to mind throughout the story. I know these are my anchor scenes. And so on. In this book, there were probably four, and to some extent I was working on getting from one to the other.” With drunk on loveGuillory reveals, “It was really the first time I had to write it down, even though I wasn’t ready to write the book yet. That those were a few scenes I just had to get started with.”
They’re not exactly the same in the finished book, Guillory notes, because “I tend to do draft after draft when I’m writing,” but a lot of “the key gist is still in those scenes. And I never write anything on the order, but I still had to get some stuff down.”
In terms of research, Guillory spent some time in wine country speaking to people involved in the business. “There are things I know just because I’m a person who goes to wineries sometimes, but it was really helpful to talk to people who had a background in the wine business, who have worked in wineries for a long time, or who work in the hospitality industry and could tell me from the other side how things really work,” she says.

Do you have to read Jasmine Guillory’s books in order?
Since this is a brand new universe, drunk on love would be a great place to start if you’ve never read any of Guillory’s books! As for her others, she admits that some people want to start with at the beginning The Wedding Date. “I definitely know people who like to read everything in order. I’ve always been that type of person, so I get it,” she says.
“But I also think that the first six books are books that you can jump into anywhere and then go back and see what appeals to you. Read the back cover of the book and decide which characters you want to start with.”
How did Jasmine Guillory get into writing?
Guillory wasn’t always a writer. She practiced law and took up writing after work as a creative outlet, just to see if she liked it. “And then I realized that I really love writing,” she says. “At that point, it wasn’t one of those books that anyone had read. Nobody saw the first book I wrote,” she reveals. At that point, it wasn’t even a romance novel, she says; It was a young adult.
Guillory began reading romance novels extensively while going through a particularly difficult time in her own life. “I noticed that Romance is the perfect genre to read when you’re going through something tough because you know there will be a happy ending no matter what happens in the book. And sometimes that’s just what you need.”
“So many people have said to me, ‘I discovered your books in the early parts of the pandemic, it really got me through 2020.’ And I’m so fortunate that my books have been able to help everyone during this time,” she continues. “I think a lot of people turned to romance during the pandemic because we all needed that. I’ve seen romance come through to me helped really tough times, so I’m so glad my novels were able to help everyone.”
So Guillory started writing The Wedding Date, and “had fun writing this book,” she says. “I kept getting the feeling—which many readers will recognize—where I felt like I couldn’t wait to get home to continue reading my book and see what happens. But it was the book I wrote, not the book I read,” she laughs. “So, that was the book that got me my agent and my first publishing deal.” Guillory went on to balance both her legal career and writing, only dropping out of law school to write full-time until she it had published three books.
Are there any Jasmine Guillory books being made into movies?
“Let’s all keep our fingers crossed! That would make me very happy, so we’ll keep our fingers crossed,” says Guillory, laughing. We definitely will!
