Hydrogen Economy – the city of Lancaster, CA, has won the launch of H2 Twin Cities worldwide.

The H2-TRANS-PACIFIC team, one of two teams selected to receive the first international H2 Twin Cities award, connects Lancaster and Namie, Japan, as consultants to Hawai’i County in providing clean renewable H2 solutions.

The city of Lancaster, Hawai’i County, and Namie, Japan have won the opening of the H2 Twin Cities Initiative at the US Department of Energy with its proposal for the H2 – TRANS – PACIFIC Team to develop clean renewable H2 solutions to support energy and strengthen relationships in the Pacific. .

The announcement of the award was made on November 16, 2022, at COP27 in Egypt by the Secretary of Energy of the United States, Jennifer M. Granholm, in cooperation with the governments of Japan and the United Kingdom.

Through this Trans-Pacific Mentor-Mentee partnership of municipal leaders, Lancaster and Namie, Japan, have pledged to share strategies and best practices to advance H2 renewables and cell use in Hawai’i County, Big Island. Namie and Lancaster are the first H2 renewable cities in the world, and have attracted industry, government, and academic support to build their infrastructure.

Over the past decade, the City of Lancaster has become a leader in renewable energy, attracting more than $2 billion in leading renewable and clean projects.

These three municipalities want to make significant progress in carbon policy by 2035. Although they represent different areas, demographics, economic operators, and groups of hydrogen deployment, they share the common bond of being the first to adopt hydrogen demonstration projects through visionary leadership.

Unfortunately, all of their communities are also experiencing an increasing number of natural disasters—many caused by rapid climate change.

Eiko Yoshida, Mayor of Namie City in Fukushima prefecture, said that after suffering greatly from the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster in Japan 11 years ago, Namie City wants to expand the use of renewable energy and produce hydrogen at their world’s largest FH2R facility.

“We are starting with converting municipal waste into hydrogen energy to power our municipal fleet. These ambitious goals and innovative solutions cannot be achieved without the visionary and energetic leaders of these cities, according to Lex Heslin, CEO of Enso Infrastructure, a developer of green hydrogen projects. Heslin helped bring the three cities together and acted as a consultant for H2 – TRANS – PACIFIC.

Lancaster, for its part, has entered into several new partnerships with some of the world’s leading companies, which include BYD, which makes electric buses; Heliogen, which produces hydrogen from solar energy; SGH2, which releases waste into hydrogen; and Hitachi Zosen Inova (HZI), which converts organic waste into renewable natural gas and hydrogen.

The city also launched its own company, Lancaster Energy, to allow residents to use renewable energy locally at low cost.
