BOSTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–BIOMEDevice Boston, the leading industry conference for medical device design and manufacturing, opened yesterday with a powerful keynote address from renowned Theranos whistleblower Erika Cheung. Cheung, who is now CEO and founder of Ethics in Entrepreneurship, reflected on past experiences and how leaders of organizations today can learn from past circumstances and collectively challenge medtech companies to uphold best practices as the industry evolves.
“That point of ethical humility, the fact that there’s the capacity and ability that we can all have in these situations … is really important,” Cheung said. “There are many environments that can put pressure on us that really affect our ability to make good decisions and that we find acceptable. We need to understand that healthcare in particular has a certain responsibility to be confident and capable.”
Cheung was welcomed by an eager audience of young and diverse entrepreneurs with a clearly observable increase in this attendee demographic, as well as industry veterans in an hour-long question and answer session that followed. Questions received revolved around barriers in the industry, e.g. B. distinguishing yourself as women-led organizations, creating opportunities for diversity in ethically-run companies, and how to bring about changes in regulatory levels by borrowing from other parallel industries.
“The key is very simple; It means being honest with people,” Cheung said. “Talking about limitations or talking about where they currently stand, both on the founders side… and on the investing side about comfortable hearing issues. It will be important to prevent a situation where there are these extreme exaggerations of what is happening in the R&D phase.”
“It was invaluable to hear Erika’s expertise and perspective on how to maintain an ethical culture within the medtech community,” said Adrienne Zepeda, Group Event Director, BIOMEDevice Boston. “We value her perspective through her work in Ethics in Entrepreneurship and hope having access to her at events of this nature will help provide resources for investors, entrepreneurs and workers to better identify and address ethical issues in emerging businesses .”
