Dubai leads world in transition towards green economy: Al Tayer

WGES 2022 focuses on empowering youth to play an influential role in building a sustainable future.

Dubai continues to strengthen its position as a pioneer and leader in the transition to a green economy to support the efforts of the UAE and the rest of the world to combat the devastating effects of climate change.

Dubai opened in October, following instructions from His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, to pave the way for the city’s transformation to a carbon neutral economy over the next three decades In 2021, the Dubai Future Council on Energy launched an in-depth study outlining how the emirate can achieve carbon neutrality (net-zero emissions) by 2050.

“The framework for achieving our net-zero goals has now been established and will help reinforce Dubai’s position as a leading enabler of green initiatives that help tackle climate change and create a seamless path to realizing our vision of economic prosperity Goes hand in hand with environmental sustainability,” said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Chair of the Dubai Future Council on Energy, MD and CEO of the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) and Chair of the Green Economy Organization (WGEO).

According to Al Tayer, the study is part of Dubai’s efforts to meet its sustainability goals set out in the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050 to deploy 100% of energy generation capacity from clean energy sources by 2050, in addition to a Green Hydrogen -strategy being developed. These efforts will help fight climate change and create opportunities for a more sustainable economy.

The World Green Economy Summit (WGES) 2022 will highlight ongoing global efforts, discuss sustainable action plans to combat the negative impacts of changing climatic conditions, and support joint initiatives to help the world achieve future sustainability through the transition to a green economy reach.

WGES is organized by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa), World Green Economy Organization (WGEO) and Dubai Supreme Council of Energy in partnership with international organizations on 28th and 29th September 2022 at Dubai World Trade Centre.

The summit will bring together prominent thought leaders and experts to share the latest insights on climate change initiatives, covering a wide range of sectors – transport and mobility, green technologies, smart cities and urban planning, youth participation, investment and finance.

The event will help delegates gather key insights from case study presentations and discussions of success stories from governments, large corporations and other organizations currently making efforts to address climate change. A major highlight of the Summit will be the release of the 8th Dubai Declaration, which will include new commitments to shape future strategies and action plans in support of climate action and green economy initiatives. WGES 2022 focuses on empowering youth to play an influential role in building a sustainable future, accelerating the transition to renewable energy and bringing about positive change in society. Discussions about youth form one of the thematic pillars of the summit, alongside energy, finance and food security.

The Summit is an ideal platform for young people to express their views on shaping their future and to share their views with decision-makers. This will be achieved through the active participation of young people in high-level discussions with experts and thought leaders on the green economy and climate change. Youth can also help make recommendations for policy-making at local, national and international levels and develop plans and strategies to drive climate action and green goals for the next generation.

Additionally, WGES 2022 prioritizes raising youth awareness of environmental and sustainability issues and encourages them to start green small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The summit also strengthens the role of young entrepreneurs by enhancing their skills to find innovative and sustainable solutions and accelerate green growth worldwide to achieve sustainable development.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer stressed that the summit pays particular attention to youth and their role in developing sustainable solutions. WGES is associated with the country’s pioneering efforts to empower youth, increase their role in the country’s development, and harness their talents and creativity to build a more resilient national and international economy. The summit also showcases the UAE’s future generation as pioneers who will realize the country’s ambitious strategies and increase the UAE’s global competitiveness in all fields.

“In the UAE we believe that the youth implement the nation’s strategies and ambitious plans. We use their advanced knowledge in the latest technologies to increase their contribution to anticipating a sustainable future. This supports His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s vision, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, to make Dubai a global hub for clean energy and green economy and to achieve the UAE’s centenary in 2071; to make the UAE the leading nation in the world, as well as the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Emissions Strategy 2050 to deploy 100% of energy generation capacity from clean energy sources by 2050,” added Al Tayer.
