Rory McIlroy wins his third Hero Dubai Desert Classic title
Rory McIlroy went into 2023 on a winning streak with a stunning victory at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic after a thrilling final-round showdown with rival Patrick Reed.
The world No.1 made it three times into the final round of the Rolex Series event at Emirates Golf Club, with LIV Golf member Reed – who was involved in a pre-tournament dispute with McIlroy – jumping ahead with an eagle. and five birdies in his first 13 holes.
McIlroy made three birdies in five holes on the ninth but bogeyed the 15th, while Reed’s bogey at the fourth raised the possibility of a mouth-watering playoff between the pair.
Patrick Reed moved to -14 at the Dubai Desert Classic, one behind McIlroy, who hit a superb bunker shot on the sixth hole.
Reed – playing ahead of the Northern Irishman in the group – closed the final seven-under 65 to set the club’s target at 18, but McIlroy finished one round 68 to pull one back. – victory.
McIlroy’s success saw him claim his first win at the opening event of the calendar year and also join Ernie Els as three-time winner of the Dubai Desert Classic, with his latest win extending his lead at the top of the world rankings.
