says researcher, scientist and entrepreneur, Ifeoluwa Bejide Iman Aji About his business
what Do you have educational qualifications?
For my primary education, I attended Ecwa Nursery and Primary School in Akure, Ondo State. I went to Redeemers High School, Mowe, Ogun State.
I then obtained a Bachelors degree in Microbiology from Redeemers University, Ede, Osun State. I also have a master’s degree in medical microbiology from the same university.
What services does your business offer?
I sell women’s clothes and accessories. I am also a fashion designer and illustrator. I also run a branding business where I coach entrepreneurs and teach people new digital skills.
How did you manage to raise capital to start the business?
I started with a small capital when I was still in high school (SSS3). When I got into college about nine years ago, I took it as a serious business. Then students came to me asking for different things and I kept adding those items to my stock list. My room practically became a small store. I thank God that I have a physical store now.
What are the challenges you face in business?
At the initial stage, there was not much capital. So, I had to start small and wait until the items sold out before buying new sets. Lack of funds did not allow me to buy bulk goods. But, I finally overcame that challenge. I realized that in business, capital probably won’t always be enough. Especially with the increase in the cost of things in the country. Clearance and import fees can really drive one crazy now. Also, some customers are still not willing to pay the delivery fee. At first, I only did door-to-door delivery nationwide, so it was a limitation for potential overseas customers. But now, we do nationwide delivery.
Another challenge was that many clients and friends owed one of them no matter how hard he tried to avoid it. And recovering those debts is usually a challenge. But, things are getting better and now there are easier ways to repay debts.
How did you overcome the challenges you mentioned?
By trying new methods and listening to customer feedback, in order to continuously improve. Also, I now use invoicing and accounting programs. I also opened a website for my business to reduce the level of customer debt. In order for the customer to successfully make a purchase on the website, they must pay in full.
In terms of delivery, I have switched to a better plan with better logistics services.
How do you attract customers?
Through referrals, and on social media platforms such as Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook. Some customers also just enter the store
How do you deal with online customers?
There are many different types of customers in business. They can be calm, understanding, rude or outspoken. One can even meet customers who want to scam him.
I’ve learned to be really polite and cheerful no matter what kind of negativity I get from a customer. A client recently told me that one of the reasons they kept coming back for me was because of my humbleness and politeness.
Have you received any training before entering the business?
No, I didn’t. Business comes naturally to me. Also, it runs in my family. I have been exposed to selling items since I was a child.
What is the main support you have received since you started the business?
My biggest support has been from my family, contrary to what some say families don’t support their business. In the early stages of my business, my mother did deliveries. He would take the goods to the park, call the customers and even follow up on them.
My sister has been wonderful too. He “hypes” me and is very supportive of my business. He supports me and refers many of his friends to me. I also have friends who carry bags of clothes for me, advertise on my behalf and expect nothing in return.
How do you manage your business and still have time to do other things?
Many people ask me this question. While I don’t want to sound like a “cliché”, it’s actually by the grace of God, because it’s so hard to explain. But looking at it more physically, proper planning and discipline have also helped me. I spend time on my business and other things. I work very well with time. If I decide to spend two hours a day posting business content on my social media accounts, I won’t exceed this time. I believe there is a time for everything.
Have you ever thought about quitting?
I know this may sound unbelievable. But, I have never thought about leaving. I do not believe in surrender. However, I have rested when necessary.
What are your other areas of interest?
I have a talk show where I talk about life, versus experiences and expectations. I am also interested in research.
