Bertrand Piccard, founder and Chairman of the Solar Impulse Foundation, as a keynote speaker at the First World PET Biorecycling Summit organized by Carbios

Carbios (Euronext Growth Paris: ALCRB) has pioneered the development and industrialization of biological technologies to reinvent the life cycle of plastics and textiles. the world’s first PET Biorecycling Summit December 7-8, 2022 in Paris. The event attracted more than 100 international participants from the worlds of science, academia and industry to exchange advances in biorecycling and how to bring these innovations to market for a circular economy.

The two-day conference brought together world-renowned scientists from various academic institutions to share their latest research on PET enzymatic depolymerization. Bertrand Piccard, initiator and chairman of the Solar Impulse Foundation1, joined as a keynote speaker for the final session, focusing on PET recycling and praising Carbios’ contribution to reducing plastic pollution. The summit ends today with a visit to the Carbios demonstration plant in Clermont-Ferrand. The demonstration plant opened in September 2021 and will bring the Carbios technology one step closer to industrialization. Following the success of the demonstration plant, Carbios is on track to build and operate the world’s first industrial-scale enzymatic PET recycling plant (with a capacity to process 50,000 tons of PET waste per year) in France (Longueville) by 2025.2and begin licensing its technology worldwide.

  • Bertrand Picard, Solar Impulse Foundation, as keynote speaker

  • Strategic partnership speakers: L’Oréal, Salomon and McKinsey

Bertrand Piccard, serial researcher, psychiatrist and clean technology pioneer, initiator and chairman of the Solar Impulse Foundation: “Reducing plastic waste is one of the main problems of our time. Carbios’ technology for biorecycling plastics was one of the first innovations to be named an “Effective Solution” by the Solar Impulse Foundation in 2019.3. Carbios has my continued support and I appreciate today’s initiative to bring together key stakeholders in the fight to protect the environment.

Alain Marty, Chief Scientific Officer of Carbios: “At Carbios, our teams have developed a unique enzymatic process that enables the biological recycling of the second most used plastic in the world: PET. Unlike mainstream recycling methods, our innovative process enables the recycling of all types of waste, even polyester textiles, new PET plastics The quality that can be reused in production is equal to the clean ones. The first PET Biorecycling Summit gave us the opportunity to explore the scientific advances in the field of enzymatic recycling and push ourselves forward, faster, with the support of an international network of experts.”

Emmanuel Ladent, Chief Executive Officer of Carbios: “The success of our industrialization model is based on our ability to form strategic partnerships. Since the establishment of Carbios, we have established partnerships in research, business and finance, as well as consortia with major brand owners in the packaging and textile industries. I am honored that so many delegates attended the first PET Biorecycling Summit because I believe that we can achieve a truly circular economy with biorecycling only when scientists and industry work together.”

About Carbs

Founded in 2011 by Truffle Capital, Carbios is a green chemical company developing biological and innovative processes. Through its unique approach of combining enzymes and plastics, Carbios aims to meet new consumer expectations and the challenges of the broader environmental transition to address the major challenge of our time: plastic and textile pollution. Carbios converts all types of PET (the dominant polymer in polyester bottles, trays, textiles) into its primary components, which can then be recycled to produce new PET plastics of the same quality as virgin plastics. This PET innovation, the first of its kind in the world, was recently recognized in a scientific article published on the front cover of the prestigious journal Nature. Carbios successfully launched its demonstration plant in Clermont-Ferrand in 2021. Now, it has taken another important step towards industrializing its process by building a first-of-its-kind unit in partnership with Indorama Ventures.

In 2017, Carbios and L’Oréal formed a consortium to contribute to the industrialization of its proprietary processing technology. Nestlé Waters, PepsiCo and Suntory Beverage & Food Europe, committed to developing innovative solutions for sustainable development, joined this consortium in April 2019. In 2022, Carbios On signed an agreement with Patagonia, PUMA and Salomon to develop solutions that promote recycling and recycling. the circle of their products.
