The state government on Monday agreed to appoint Pourakarmikas, who are currently working on a contract basis, as permanent employees.
The decision was made in the state cabinet after Prime Minister Basavaraj Bommai met the Pourakarmikas who had protested permanent employment. The cabinet has approved the appointment of 11,133 pourakarmikas under a special recruitment program, sources said.
Also, sources said they will be appointed in the monthly salary structure of between £17,000 and £28,890.
Following Mr Bommai’s announcement in the Legislative Assembly last week that new legislation would be introduced to make Kannada compulsory, the Cabinet approved the bill on Monday.
Sources said it is likely that the proposed legislation will be tabled in the ongoing monsoon session.
The Cabinet also approved amendments to the Karnataka State Civil Services (Regulation of Transfer of Teachers) Act, 2020, allowing for reciprocal transfers.
Another amendment to the Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board Act to allow for the merger of the SSLC Board with the Pre-University Board was also approved by Cabinet.
It also approved the Bengaluru Metropolitan Land Transport Authority Bill, 2022 and the Karnataka Land Revenue (Second Amendment) Bill, 2022.
The cabinet is said to have approved the extension of Chief Minister Vidya Nidhi’s program to children of fishermen from 2022 to 2023.
‘Arkavathy redo’ case needs review
Amid Congress’ onslaught on alleged corruption in the ruling BJP government, the cabinet learns it discussed alleged irregularities in the Arkavathy redo case during the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government.
The cabinet is said to have discussed the matter and decided to review the case.
Sources said the cabinet also discussed the Justice HS Kempanna Commission report on the issue of denotification in the Arkavathy layout.
Lawsuits against BJP workers to be dropped
The cabinet has also decided to withdraw criminal cases against 35 people, based on the recommendations of a cabinet subcommittee. These cases had been filed against BJP workers, Hindu activists, Kannada activists and peasant leaders.
