Books: ‘Detective Blue & the Crew’ takes kids on a K-9 ride-along

More than 100 people joined local author Curtis Wideman at the Levy Senior Center on September 25 to celebrate his new children’s book. Detective Blue and the crew. The book was available at the event along with Wideman’s first book. top dogreleased in 2016. The atmosphere was festive, with free food, a balloon artist for the kids, and a chance for families to socialize on a beautiful fall afternoon.

Community members, friends, family and visitors of all ages lined up from 3 to 5 p.m. to get their books signed and for photos with Wideman, a former Evanston Township High School track star who continued his athletic career at Southern to pose University of Illinois. In 2015 he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and then earned a Master of Science in Kinesiology.

For Wideman, the book signing was an “amazing day to give back to and inspire the youth.” He said his books were inspired by his own experiences at Evanston and the people who motivated and encouraged him to succeed.

Detective Blue and the crew is dedicated in part to “the men and women who wear BLUE” who build trust between police and the citizens they are tasked with protecting. A main character in the book is based on Wideman’s brother, Kyle Wideman, Evanston Police Detective.

“It’s really cool to see myself, my partner and ours [K-9] dog to be a part of this book,” said Kyle Wideman. “My brother did a great job with the thoughtfulness behind the book… It really shows the positive nature of police work. It shows that police officers are good for the community – that they are there to help people.”

Curtis Wideman also dedicates his book to minority business owners, “particularly those in the Evanston community,” and said he hopes to “illustrate the importance of entrepreneurship and show how it can be achieved.”

The synopsis on the back of the book reveals enough to make the book a must-read, especially for Evanston residents.
