An American Airlines passenger is asking the company for “reparations” after tweeting that she was “clamped” between two “obese people” on a three-hour flight.
Sydney Watson, who describes herself as an Australian-American political commentator, tweeted on Monday that she was “literally sandwiched between two overweight people on my flight”.
“This is absolutely NOT acceptable or okay. If fat people want to be fat, that’s fine. But it’s a whole different thing when I’m stuck between you guys for three hours with your arms on my body,” Watson said.
In the tweet thread, Watson said, “If you need a seat belt extender, you’re too fat to be on a plane.”

“Buy two seats or don’t fly,” Watson added.
Watson said the flight attendant on the plane “asked me four times if I needed anything” and gave her “that’s a f-ked” expression of pity.
According to Watson, she asked a brother of one of the women she was sitting next to if he would like to “switch places.”
“He says no. That’s okay :)’ … and then I started screaming internally,” Watson said.
“I don’t care if that’s mean. My whole body is currently being touched against my will. I can’t even fold down the armrests on either side because there’s no place to fuck. I’m sick of acting like this Obesity on this scale is normal. Let me assure you it’s not,” she said.

After being called, American Airlines responded, tweeting, “Our passengers come in all different shapes and sizes. We are sorry that you felt unwell on your flight.”
“Holy shit,” Watson said of American Airlines’ response to her experience.
“It really is their official response to me being sandwiched between two obese people,” Watson said. “So I’m expected to only have a quarter seat when flying? I just experienced breaking a sweat, being touched without my consent, slapped in the face and not having personal space for hours. And your answer is essentially: ‘a pity’? Is that what I’m getting here?” Watson said.
At one point during the flight, Watson said she “decided to close my tray table and hold my cup of tea between my teeth because it’s stabbing her stomach and I can’t get it down properly.”

Responding to media coverage of her experience, Watson said she stands behind “everything I’ve said,” and tweeted, “I’d like some amends.”
