Air Liquide (Paris: AI) and TotalEnergies is developing an innovation, based on the conversion to a biorefinery of TotalEnergies’ Grandpuits site, to produce and certify renewable and low-carbon hydrogen. Under a long-term agreement, making TotalEnergies buy hydrogen produced to meet the needs of its platform, Air Liquide will invest 130 million euros in the construction and operation of a new hydrogen production unit. The unit will use biogas from a biorefinery built by TotalEnergies, and will be supplied with Air Liquide’s carbon capture technology, Cryocap.TM. This innovation will prevent 150,000 tons of CO emissions2 year compared to current methods. TotalEnergies’ biorefinery will use the unit’s hydrogen to produce sustainable jet fuel.
In line with the two companies’ ambition to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, the project is based on a sustainable and circular approach:
-
Air Liquide will build and operate the Grandpuits site new hydrogen production unit with an annual capacity of over 20,000 tons. By recycling, among other things, residual biogas from the Grandpuits biorefinery instead of the natural gas used regularly, the hydrogen produced by the unit will be partially renewable.
-
In addition, this section will include, since its inception, and Air Liquide Cryocap™ H2 carbon capture region. This will help capture, for reuse in food and industry, more than 110,000 tons of CO.2 per year which helps reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the area.
-
Most of the renewable and low hydrogen gas produced will be used by the biorefinery that production of sustainable aviation fuel. This hydrogen can also be used as a catalyst regular transport in the region of Ile-de-France.
Pascal Vinet, Vice President and member of Air Liquide’s Executive Committee, which oversees operations mainly in European Industries, he said. : “This new project is characterized by the combination of several solutions to produce renewable and low-emission hydrogen, contributing to the decarbonization of the Grandpuits site of TotalEnergies. It also offers the opportunity to recover CO.2 as part of a circular economy approach that takes advantage of agro-food. This project showcases Air Liquide’s expertise in working with its customers on customized solutions to help them reduce their emissions and participate in the fight against global warming. It also provides another example of the important role that hydrogen will play in the success of the energy transition. “
“By reusing the gas produced by the biorefinery into renewable hydrogen, this new project takes full advantage of the conversion of the Grandpuits refinery into a zero-energy plant that uses biomass energy, especially for the production of sustainable aviation fuel,” he said. he said Bernard Pinatel, President, Refining & Chemicals, TotalEnergies.“Combined with low hydrogen production and CO2 capture, this project supports TotalEnergies’ ambition to eliminate all hydrogen emissions used by its European factories by 2030.”
Air Liquide et l’hydrogen
In line with the Paris Agreement of 2015 and to address the acceleration of climate change, Air Liquide is committed to achieving carbon neutrality in its operations by 2050. As a pioneer of hydrogen, the Group believes that the molecule has a key role to play in the success of the energy transition . Over the past 60 years, the Group has developed a unique hydrogen technology, which places them today as a leader in the production and distribution of low-carbon and renewable hydrogen and a world record in liquid hydrogen. The group currently develops, operates and manufactures some of the world’s largest emissions reduction solutions for industry and road, aviation and marine.
Air Liquide has taken several commitments to advance the development of hydrogen in the energy transition: The group plans to invest 8 billion in the carbon hydrogen value chain by 2035 and expand the total electrolysis capacity of 3 GW by 2030.
About the Grandpuits site of TotalEnergies
Commissioned in 1966, Total’s Grandpuits-Bailly-Carrois refinery was for a long time the only refinery in the Paris region. In September 2020, TotalEnergies launched a project to transform the site, in line with its strategy to become neutral by 2050. This zero-emission project, with a total cost of more than 500 million euros, is based on several future developments. -Activities focused on biomass, renewable energy, and circular economy: recycling of plastic waste products, production of biosourced and biodegradable bioplastics, production of sustainable aviation fuel, construction of a solar farm and storage of electricity and batteries. Commissioning of the new units will begin in 2022, and all should be operational by 2025.
